What Helped WONDERLAB Sell More Than One Billion Bottles Across Its Probiotic Line?

TIME:2026-08-05 17:10:02

As of June 2026, cumulative sales of WONDERLAB's probiotic product line had exceeded 1 billion bottles across all channels. The milestone came after Frost & Sullivan recognized WONDERLAB as the No.1 probiotics brand by sales value in the Chinese mainland for three consecutive years, from January 2021 through December 2023.

Founded in Shenzhen in 2019, the company launched a broad-spectrum probiotic for adults, known as the Blue Bottle, in June 2020. The ready-to-consume powder came in a portable single-serving bottle, removing the need to measure or mix it. The convenient format made the probiotic easier to fit into a daily routine, while the blue bottle became a recognizable WONDERLAB product. The company then used more targeted product development, proprietary strains, external research partnerships and in-house manufacturing to expand one flagship into a probiotic portfolio for a wider range of consumers.

From the Blue Bottle to products for different consumer groups

Designed for broad daily gut support, the Blue Bottle has gone through successive formula updates since its launch. The fourth-generation All-in-One Probiotics (Blue Bottle 4.0) includes WONDERLAB's proprietary GOLDGUT-M520 strain. It remains the company's core product for everyday use.

With the Blue Bottle established as its everyday product, WONDERLAB began developing for more specific consumers and routines. In weight management, WONDERLAB introduced an industry-first morning-and-evening pairing, with the upgraded combination featuring BODY100 PLUS™ in the morning and SHAPE100 PLUS™ in the evening. The portfolio also extends to children's gut health, women's health and daily probiotic support for consumers aged 50 and over. The brand has also introduced products for oral care and sleep.

The research system behind the products

WONDERLAB has invested more than RMB 100 million in research. Its in-house team of more than 40 researchers spans medicine, pharmacy, food science and biology. The team works across three platforms covering strain and microbiome research, product development and functional ingredient evaluation.

GOLDGUT® is the company's proprietary strain library. Its representative strain, GOLDGUT-M520, was selected through a six-year program that screened 453 breast-milk samples collected from healthy mothers across multiple regions of China. It has a granted Chinese invention patent and is deposited in a national culture collection. The library also includes GOLDGUT-LA100 and GOLDGUT-LR99, used in SHAPE100 PLUS™; GOLDGUT-HNU082, for which three Chinese invention patents have been granted; and GOLDGUT-BB18 and GOLDGUT-BB69, used in the 50+ and children's lines.

External collaborations are organized around specific research areas. WONDERLAB's joint institute with Shenzhen University works on microbiome research, the screening of functional ingredients from food resources and related mechanism studies, while its center with Hainan University screens and develops tropical microbial resources. The company has also established research platforms with the China National Research Institute of Food and Fermentation Industries and Shandong University, covering functional prebiotics and metabolic health, respectively.

Production and quality

WONDERLAB's manufacturing base, Shenzhen Porshealth Bioengineering Co., Ltd., is located in Shenzhen's Longgang District. Built with an investment of more than RMB 50 million, the 20,000-square-meter digital facility includes a GMP Class 100,000 clean production area, a GMP Class 10,000 R&D center and an advanced laboratory. Digital systems cover planning, production execution and warehouse management.

More than RMB 10 million has also been invested in the site's testing center, and the site has a quality-management team of more than 30 people. Beyond its own testing, WONDERLAB works with SGS, Centre Testing International Group Co., Ltd. (CTI), and testing organizations in Guangzhou and Shenzhen. The site has achieved Grade A+ certification under the BRCGS Global Standard for Food Safety and also holds ISO 9001, HACCP and HALAL certifications.

Public-interest programs, green manufacturing and bottle recovery

In November 2025, the Shenzhen WonderLab Commonweal Foundation donated to the Xinyue Fund to help fund congenital heart disease treatment for children aged 0 to 18 from families facing financial hardship at Shanghai Children's Medical Center, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. In September 2025, the foundation also donated to the Adream Center program, run by the Shanghai Adream Charitable Foundation, to support learning spaces and enrichment courses at two schools in Xiaogan, Hubei, over five years.

Porshealth was included in Shenzhen's 2025 Green Factory list and in the national 2025 Green Factory list published by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in March 2026. WONDERLAB launched its Empty Bottle Return Program in 2022. By the opening of its eighth season in July 2026, the program had collected more than 5.55 million product bottles. WONDERLAB estimates that the bottles collected to date correspond to approximately 73 metric tons of avoided carbon emissions. The latest season introduced a mobile tool for mail-in returns and progress tracking, alongside drop-off points at more than 60 stores in 27 cities.
